Made famous by the lyrics of Percy French “Where the Mountains o’Mourne sweep down to the sea,” these distinctive granite mountains are the highest in Northern Ireland. Rising the highest amongst the 28 peaks is Slieve Donard (2,796 feet) with views that look out over Murlough Bay and the coastal town of Newcastle. It is said on a clear day one can see all the countries of the British Isles!
The Mourne’s are famous for many things--challenging peaks, gentle slopes, crystal blue lakes and the inspiration for Belfast author C.S Lewis’s Narnia in the “Chronicles of Narnia” book series. A crisscrossing network of paths and tracks provide walkers and hikers of all skill levels the opportunity to explore the vast area of the Mourne’s.
